Sheltered by ancient cypress trees beside the Pyramid of Cestius, this burial ground holds the graves of Keats ('Here lies One Whose Name was writ in Water'), Shelley ('Cor Cordium'), Gramsci, and dozens of other artists, writers, and thinkers who died far from home. The atmosphere is deeply peaceful — birdsong replaces traffic noise, and dappled light falls across weathered headstones covered in ivy and wildflowers. A resident colony of cats adds to the tranquility. The cemetery is small enough to explore in 30 minutes but resonant enough to keep you lingering. It's a contemplative counterweight to Rome's monumental bombast and one of the most poetic spots in the city.
