Tucked into the residential Trieste neighbourhood, this fantastical cluster of 26 palazzi and 17 villas designed by architect Gino Coppede in the 1920s looks like nothing else in Rome. The Fountain of the Frogs anchors Piazza Mincio, where Art Nouveau, medieval, Baroque, and Liberty-style elements collide in ornate facades dripping with gargoyles, turrets, frescoed arches, and wrought-iron spiders. Enter through the grand arch on Via Tagliamento and the shift from normal Roman streetscape to fairy-tale architecture is instantaneous. It takes 20 minutes to walk the whole quarter, but you'll spend longer photographing the details. Almost no tourists make it here despite the area being just a tram ride from the centre.
