One of the world's smallest inhabited islands sits in the middle of the Tiber between Trastevere and the Jewish Ghetto, connected by two ancient bridges. The 10th-century Basilica di San Bartolomeo anchors the island alongside a still-functioning 16th-century hospital. By day it's a peaceful piazza with a handful of restaurants; in summer evenings it transforms into an outdoor cinema and live music venue when the L'Isola del Cinema festival takes over the riverbanks. The ancient Romans shaped the island's southern tip to resemble the prow of a ship — fragments of the travertine cladding are still visible at the waterline. A complete loop of the island takes ten minutes but the atmosphere rewards lingering.
