Galleria Doria Pamphilj
This private palazzo on Via del Corso hides one of Rome's finest art collections behind a surprisingly modest facade. The Pamphilj family still lives upstairs, and the gallery's audio guide is narrated by Prince Jonathan Doria Pamphilj himself, lending an intimacy impossible in a state museum. The star piece is Velazquez's portrait of Pope Innocent X — reportedly so realistic that the pope himself called it 'too truthful.' Surrounding rooms hold works by Caravaggio (Rest on the Flight into Egypt, Penitent Magdalene), Raphael, Titian, and Bernini. The mirrored Gallery of Mirrors rivals Versailles on a smaller scale. Despite sitting 200 metres from the Trevi Fountain, it receives a fraction of the visitor traffic.
