Parco archeologico di Ostia Antica
Rome's answer to Pompeii sits just 30 minutes away by suburban train, yet draws a fraction of the crowds. This was ancient Rome's main port city, and the excavations reveal a remarkably complete urban fabric: apartment blocks (insulae) still standing four storeys high, a theatre seating 4,000, public baths with intact mosaic floors, taverns with marble counters, and a main street (Decumanus Maximus) you can walk end to end. The forum, temples, and latrines all survive in a state that makes daily Roman life tangible rather than abstract. Unlike the Forum in central Rome, here you can wander freely through buildings, climb staircases, and feel the scale of ordinary ancient life.
