Emperor Hadrian built this sprawling retreat 30 kilometres east of Rome as a personal recreation of the greatest buildings he encountered during his travels across the empire. The 120-hectare complex includes a maritime theatre (a circular island study surrounded by a moat), replicas of Greek and Egyptian buildings, a canopus pool reflecting rows of caryatid statues, enormous baths, and an underground network of service tunnels. Much remains remarkably intact, and the site's sheer scale — larger than Pompeii — means you can wander for hours with minimal company. Olive groves and cypress trees now fill spaces between ruins, creating a landscape that's as much about atmosphere as archaeology.
